With their bachelor's and master's programmes, the jazz courses at the University of Music Würzburg offer a modern range of studies geared to the professional field of jazz.
The focus of the studies is on instrumental or vocal instruction with renowned and highly qualified main subject lecturers. The individual musical and technical needs of the students and their artistic development are in the foreground. Directly linked to this are the combo, band and ensemble lessons, which take into account the diversity and differentiation of the most important jazz styles. In addition to big band and jazz choir, our area of study includes a stylistically broad range of combo offerings in straight ahead, modern, contemporary, free, odd meter, Latin, fusion, vocal, pop, and electronics.
In addition to learning and developing one's own improvisation and interpretation skills, the program also focuses on arrangement and composition techniques as well as songwriting.
The so-called Professionalization Module (PRF) teaches the use of digital media and music production. Modern, digital production processes are to be stimulated and implemented in the student's own artistic practice. An extensive rental system enables students to work independently with state-of-the-art equipment. Aspects of marketing, self-organization and musicians' health are also taught in this subject area. The PRF module is a particularly unique feature of the University of Music Würzburg and responds dynamically to the ever-changing demands of the professional field.
Much of the teaching content is deepened and supplemented by regular workshops with internationally renowned artists and guest lecturers, such as John Riley, Jerry Bergonzi, Seamus Blake, Lage Lund, Mark Turner, Matt Brewer, Justin Faulkner, Michael Wollny, Eric Schaefer, Henning Sieverts, Chuck Israels, Rainer Böhm, Alan Broadbent, Flo Mega....
The artistic-pedagogical degree programme also specifically prepares students for all the requirements of a pedagogical position. The pedagogical subject complex, which is sensibly adapted to this, includes, among other things, the jazz-specific course "Improvisation Didactics".
Students can set individual accents within the framework of the elective modules. The possibility of taking courses from all other areas of the University of Music Würzburg in addition to the jazz-specific subjects strengthens cross-stylistic networks within the university.
Due to its manageable size, the Würzburg campus is characterized by a family-like atmosphere characterized by mutual respect, which increases the attention that the teachers can pay to the students, and the sufficient number of practice rooms allows for concentrated study.
In addition, the relaxed atmosphere of the traditional university town of Würzburg guarantees a high but affordable standard of living as well as a diverse social life with clubs, theaters, pubs, jam sessions and parties. The location Würzburg thus offers jazz students the best conditions for a personal development of maximum efficiency.
