The eight-semester bachelor's programme provides the professional foundation to expand musical skills and abilities and to make music the focus of one's future professional life. In almost all the degree programmes offered at the HfM Würzburg with an instrumental core subject or voice, students can choose between an artistic and an artistic-pedagogical orientation in both the classical and jazz fields.
The artistic courses primarily prepare students for a professional concert career as a soloist or as a member of an instrumental or vocal ensemble. Accordingly, in addition to intensive training in the main artistic subject, emphasis is placed on regular internal auditions and public class evenings, preparation for competitions or orchestral auditions, chamber music, and participation in the university orchestra or in the various ensembles.
The artistic-pedagogical courses are distinguished by their practical relevance to later work as music teachers in music schools or as freelancers. In addition to a sound artistic education, students acquire skills in current music pedagogy, subject didactics and teaching practice, arranging and ensemble conducting as well as in scientific work during the course of their studies.
In addition, it is possible to choose conducting, elementary music education, church music, composition, or music theory as a course of study. The design and emphasis of these courses of study is based in each case on the specific characteristics of the later professional fields.
