The individual lessons of 90 minutes per week include the study of the harpsichord and its playing techniques, taking into account historical sources as well as their practical implementation. The knowledge gained there of the stylistic variety offered by the harpsichord literature is deepened in class lessons and in audition training.
Other components of the program include continuo, a second instrument (melody instrument), literature studies, chamber music, and historical performance practice. In addition, the choice of a supplementary instrument such as fortepiano or clavichord is possible. Field trips to museums with collections of historical keyboard instruments further enrich the studies.
The harpsichord students gain a great deal of practical experience in playing the basso continuo in the various chamber music programs offered by the Department of Historical Instruments or in the university's baroque orchestra. Professional conditions for this are provided by the opportunity to participate in the festival "Tage der Alten Musik", in the annual baroque opera as well as in numerous chamber music concerts of the university.
The bachelor's degree program in harpsichord prepares students for a professional career as a soloist for historical keyboard instruments and as a continuo player within chamber music fields of activity or in baroque orchestras or "historically informed" modern orchestras.
