Johann Weiß was born in Worms on the Rhine. He studied electric guitar at the Hanover University of Music and Drama and the Hamburg University of Music. Since the end of his studies he taught as a lecturer for electric guitar, studio production and music history at the music academies in Hanover, Hamburg, Cologne and the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg. Johann Weiß has been awarded the German Record Critics' Prize and several Echo nominations as a guitarist and songwriter. His band Pure Desmond has been successfully playing concerts on the international stage for more than 20 years.

In October 2015, Johann Weiß accepted the call of the University of Music Würzburg as Professor of Popular Music.
