Johann Weiß is Professor of Popular Music at the University of Music Würzburg, Germany. As a guitarist, composer, producer and consultant, his work explores sound as an artistic and emotional medium. He combines an international performing career with music production, academic teaching and interdisciplinary creative processes at the intersection of music, design and technology.

After studying electric guitar at the Universities of Music in Hanover and Hamburg, Johann Weiß taught at the Universities of Music in Hanover, Hamburg and Cologne, as well as at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg. In 2015, he was appointed Professor of Popular Music at the University of Music Würzburg.

As a guitarist and songwriter, Johann Weiß has received the German Record Critics' Award (Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik), and his productions have earned multiple Echo Award nominations. For more than 25 years, he has performed internationally with Pure Desmond, appearing at leading concert venues and festivals.

A central focus of his work is the development of creative concepts that bring together music, design and technology. In interdisciplinary projects, he connects artistic, design and technical perspectives, develops overarching creative ideas and facilitates collaboration across disciplines. He sees sound as a medium that shapes atmosphere, communicates identity and creates memorable experiences.

This philosophy also defines his teaching. He encourages students to combine artistic excellence with curiosity, openness and interdisciplinary thinking, viewing music as a catalyst for new creative perspectives.

In 2026, Johann Weiß founded the international project NEONDRIVE. Featuring musicians including Adam Holzman and Hagar Ben-Ari, the ensemble brings together jazz, fusion and contemporary music production in a distinctive modern sound.

Since 2024, Johann Weiß has served as the University's Contact Person for Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence, Contact Person for Anti-Discrimination, a member of the Senate representing the Jazz/Percussion Department, and a member of the University Council.
