MusiCare

Music moves us – emotionally, cognitively and physically. Its effect on people has long been recognised, but is only now being increasingly understood from a scientific perspective. At the same time, one key aspect has often been overlooked until now: the health of those who practise music at the highest level.
MusiCare Würzburg is a collaboration between the Würzburg University of Music (HfM), the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg (JMU) and the University Hospital of Würzburg (UKW), which addresses precisely this issue.
MusiCare is Würzburg’s concept at the interface between music and health. It combines research, teaching and social application within an interdisciplinary triangle of art, science and medicine – thereby creating an excellent space for new insights and innovative approaches. The aim is to systematically investigate the interactions between music and health, to gain a better understanding of the specific health needs of musicians, and to embed this knowledge sustainably in education and society.
This brings together two perspectives: on the one hand, research into music as a resource for health and wellbeing; on the other, a focused examination of the health of musicians throughout their entire lives and careers.
What makes MusiCare unique is the close collaboration between three institutions that combine their respective strengths: artistic practice, scientific analysis and medical expertise.
MusiCare represents a new form of collaboration – interdisciplinary, practice-oriented and forward-looking. It is a project that not only seeks to better understand music, but also to highlight its contribution to the health of individuals and society.
