Paula Kaiser awarded

In the annual essay competition of the Society for Music Theory (GMTH), young music theorists are asked to demonstrate their analytical skills, scientific acumen and art of formulation in relation to selected topics. This year, the focus was on "The Language of Conquest: Music Theory and Postcolonial Criticism".

Paula Kaiser (Bachelor Music Theory with Prof. Matthias Tschirch and Prof. Almut Gatz) won 3rd prize, which was awarded at the opening of the GMTH Congress on 22 September in Freiburg. The prize was awarded for her essay on the early choral compositions of the Ghanaian "national composer" Ephraim Amu (1899-1995), in which she elaborates on essential musical characteristics on the one hand, and on the other hand she exemplarily illuminates the applicability of Western-style analytical tools to non-European music.
