Matthias Tschirch, born in Hameln in 1969, studied composition, piano and artistic composition (diploma) at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. He also studied musicology, media studies and philosophy at the University of Paderborn and the Humboldt University in Berlin.

After teaching music theory at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold and composition, analysis and ear training at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock, he moved to the HfM Würzburg, where he has been professor of music theory since the summer semester of 2011.

His research interests include music in the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century.
