Students explore Hamburg's piano tradition

Prof. Ana Mirabela Dina and Nina Scheidmantel took the upcoming selection of a new grand piano for the University of Music Würzburg as an opportunity to organize an eventful and instructive excursion to Hamburg for students of the piano classes. Twelve young musicians gladly accepted the offer to explore Hamburg over two days from a variety of pianistic perspectives. First, a visit to the Brahms Museum in the composers' quarter was a must for every music-interested visitor to the Hanseatic city on the Elbe. During the guided tour, the students learned many biographical details about the composer's life. A special highlight was the opportunity to play the lovingly restored Tafelklavier from that period in the rooms of the museum. Thanks to the commitment of Prof. Caroline Weichert, who had agreed to offer a short guided tour of the HfMT Hamburg, the students from Würzburg were then able to get to know this traditional northern German university.

The focus of the second day of the excursion was a visit to the Steinway Manufaktur. First of all, during a tour of the world-famous manufacturing facility, the head of the Steinway House Frankfurt, which is closely associated with the University of Music Würzburg, Mr. Marko Hartung, explained in detail the history of the development of the various models of Steinway grand pianos and answered all the students' questions. Finally, the official occasion of the Hamburg excursion came up: The selection of a new Steinway grand piano Model B. The Würzburg group was provided with six instruments. Intensive deliberations were held together with the students. In addition to an instructive, interesting and intensive experience, the excursion participants also brought back an instrument from Hamburg that was highly convincing in terms of sound and feel.
