The Opera School is dedicated to one of the most famous and popular works in the entire opera literature: Le nozze di Figaro by W. A. Mozart, libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte after the play by Beaumarchais.
Like hardly any other opera, this piece combines interpersonal tensions, erotic entanglements, intimate human portraits in an incredibly good comedy full of mix-ups, surprises and slapstick moments. This is what makes it so appealing and elementary for any student, whether singing or making music in an orchestra.
The trials and tribulations that take place on this "great day" in the house of Count Almaviva are full of wit and lightness. Nevertheless, all the characters in the opera also carry fears, injuries, and despair with them – whether due to stalking and jealousy, through mortification, insecurity, or the fear of being ridiculed in front of the community. The conflicts and suffering resolve in the grand finale in the garden at night, but will the harmony last?
Katharina Thoma's production explores the tension between rococo cheerfulness and mental abysses. Musical director Andreas Hotz will bring this masterpiece to a musical gloss, and Verena Hemmerlein conjures up timeless worlds on stage and in costume with a fine flair.
