Prof. Mathis Stier takes on deputy professorship for wind chamber music

The University of Music Würzburg is pleased to welcome Mathis Stier as a substitute professor for wind chamber music for the winter semester 2025/26.

The bassoonist moves as a musician on both established and unknown paths, in a variety of formations he plays repertoire ranging from contemporary music and improvisation to early music, which can be heard on his debut CD Sentiment on the Alpha Classics label.

In the 23/24 season he was a Rising Star of the European Concert Hall Organization in concert halls such as the Kölner Philharmonie, Elbphilharmonie, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Konzerthaus Wien, Konserthuset Stockholm, Müpa Budapest, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Barbican Centre London with a varied solo programme.

Mathis Stier was awarded second prize and the audience prize at the ARD International Music Competition. As a chamber musician, he performed a recital at the Beethovenfest Bonn, played with the Goldmund Quartet, the Franz Ensemble and the Carousel Ensemble, received invitations to chamber music festivals in France and Spain and regularly gives concerts with the accordionist Julius Schepansky.

As an orchestral musician, Mathis Stier has played with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam and is a regular guest with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra - since 2016 he has been principal bassoonist with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne.
