Master's graduate student secures prizes in Vienna and Cologne

After Christoph Preiß, who successfully completed his master's degree in piano with Prof. Bernd Glemser and organ with Prof. Dr. h. c. Christoph Bossert this year and is currently studying church music at the University of Music Würzburg, won the Schwäbisch Gmünd International Competition for Organ Improvisation in August , he has won prizes at two other international competitions in recent weeks: At the 9th International Franz Schmidt Competition, which was held from September 12 - 18, 2025 on the Wöckherl organ in the Franciscan Church, the Späth organ in the Jesuit Church and on the Mathis organ in the Schottenkirche in Vienna, Christoph Preiß won 2nd prize and thus prize money of 4,000 euros. A total of 28 participants had applied to take part, of which nine were invited to the main round in Vienna and five were admitted to the final in the Schottenkirche.

Just one week later, he was also able to impress at the International Organ Competition in the Trinitatis Church in Cologne 2025, which was held in memory of the famous doctor, theologian, organist and philosopher Albert Schweitzer. The aim was to perform organ literature and an improvisation in a pre-selection and two presence rounds, with some of the themes coming from Albert Schweitzer himself. In another international field of participants, Christoph Preiß was able to secure the 2nd prize of 1,500 euros and also the audience prize, which is endowed with 500 euros.

From the winter semester 2025/26, he will study organ (combination of literature and improvisation) with Prof. Dr. Martin Schmeding and Prof. Thomas Lennartz at the HMT Leipzig alongside his church music studies in Würzburg.
