A music project with over a hundred primary school children to strengthen music practice in elementary school

Under the direction of Daniela Ruck and Prof. Michael Forster from the Department of Elementary Music Education and accompanied by visiting professor Yoko Kubota from Tokyo, an exciting and multi-layered music project was realized at Mistelgau Primary School in the district of Bayreuth on 25 and 26 June. Over one hundred pupils from the third and fourth grades and their teachers took part in this two-day event.

A diverse and practice-oriented workshop program was designed in close cooperation with students from the Elementary Music Education degree programme - including Carolyn Englert, Anna Frühwald, Dorothee Hinkel, Maria Lechner, Lena Rach, Mirjam Rube, Johanna Schütz, Benedikt Walchshäusl and Isabel Wolf. This was tested on site, integrated into the educational context and reflected on together.

The work was carried out in cross-age groups, each comprising up to 27 children, who took part in various musical activities on a rotating basis. The joint music-making practice in the plenary session in the school gym was particularly intensive and enriching. The children gathered here at the beginning and end of the day to make music together. The students presented their instruments in a specially assembled band, accompanied the songs they had worked on and created arrangements that provided an extraordinary musical experience.

The final event offered parents and relatives the opportunity to appreciate the children's results and actively participate in hands-on activities. The project offered a unique opportunity to discover musical worlds together, to explore creative means of expression and to share the joy of music.
