Matvei Iakovlev has been appointed to a permanent post at the Giessen City Theatre

Deputy Principal Oboist, also required to play the English horn, from the coming season onwards

Matvei Iakovlev, a student in Prof. Domenico Orlando’s oboe class at the Würzburg University of Music, is to take up a permanent post as deputy principal oboist – with responsibility for the English horn – at the Stadttheater Gießen for the coming season.

Born in Saint Petersburg in 2004, the oboist has been studying for a Bachelor’s degree in oboe at the Würzburg University of Music since October 2022. He began his musical training at the renowned Central Music School in Moscow, graduating in 2022 from Maxim Orekhov’s class.

Matvei Iakovlev gained important artistic inspiration from masterclasses with Domenico Orlando, Ramon Ortega, Ralf van Daal and Melanie Rothman. He has been a member of the Paul Hindemith Orchestra Academy since 2025. He has also gained valuable orchestral experience with, amongst others, the Würzburg Philharmonic Orchestra (in 2024 as second oboe/English horn) and Hessischer Rundfunk (in 2025 as second oboe/English horn).
