The University of Music Würzburg (HfM) celebrated the completion and commissioning of its new photovoltaic systems on November 13, 2025. President Prof. Dr. Christoph Wünsch, Lord Mayor Martin Heilig and architect Rainer Kriebel gave welcoming speeches at the event in the university's theater. The facilities could be viewed via a drone flight video. The commissioning ceremony was accompanied by music from Julius Hutzler (keyboard) and Hanna Baumgartner (vocals).
The two photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the buildings in Bibrastraße (Ebracher Gasse 1) and Residenzplatz (Hofstraße 13) were installed as part of the "Photovoltaics on State Roofs" program of the Free State of Bavaria. The State Ministry of Science and the Arts provided the necessary funding. The project was planned and implemented independently by the university.
"With the installation of the photovoltaic systems and the total saving of around 65 tons of CO2 per year, we are making an important contribution to sustainability and to our university's self-sufficiency in renewable energy," emphasizes President Wünsch.
The planning and implementation took several years. As the buildings are located in the historic city center of Würzburg - in the so-called "Bischofshut" - the construction project had to meet particularly high standards set by the city of Würzburg. Thanks to the support of architect Rainer Kriebel and Rainer Metzger (consulting engineer, Weikersheim), the project was successfully completed. The photovoltaic systems were built by SunVista, Weikersheim.
Lord Mayor Martin Heilig praised this special feat: "Especially here, in the middle of the listed ensemble of our town, it is a challenge to harmonize modern technology and historical heritage. The fact that this has been achieved so convincingly here is a great joint success."
With the commissioning of the photovoltaic systems, the University of Music Würzburg is sending a clear signal for climate protection, sustainability and personal responsibility that radiates far beyond the university.
