Students explore the “Roma Expo Guitars”

The Italian guitar makers with Alexandra Whittingham

Under the guidance of Prof. Jürgen Ruck, the guitar students of the University of Music Würzburg explored the Roma Expo Guitars at the end of March. The event in the heart of Rome provided an opportunity to explore all facets of classical guitar and Italian guitar making. In addition to concerts, lectures, and practical guitar tests, the participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas with lecturers and students from other European conservatories. A total of six institutes were invited to share their expertise and learn new things.

More than thirty guitar makers from all over Italy took part in this year's "Roma Expo Guitars" and presented their instruments, some of which were built for this event. The participants were offered interesting insights into partly very innovative, tonal concepts and their technical implementation. After all the custom-made instruments had been briefly presented, there was plenty of time and opportunity for students and lecturers to play the unusual instruments and gain new sound experiences. Another highlight, albeit in stark contrast to the young guitars, was a historical instrument made in 1827 by the "forefather" of the Spanish guitar, Antonio de Torres.

The students were able to see and, above all, hear what is possible on the guitar in the course of numerous concerts with Ana Vidovic, Stephanie Jones and also Alexandra Wittingham, who presented all 30 instruments of the “Special Edition” for the festival.
