The 21st Symposium of the German Society for Music Physiology and Musicians' Medicine (DGfMM e.V.) took place at the University of Music Würzburg on November 04/05, 2022. This year's main topic was "Music students in the focus of musician's medicine". Prof. Dr. Maria Schuppert was the scientific director of the event.
The diversity of the approximately 200 participants from all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland reflected what the DGfMM stands for and what makes it special: the cooperation and professional exchange of musicians from different professional fields with colleagues from various medical disciplines as well as from psychology, physiotherapy, body and breath work, instrument making and also with students from medicine, psychology and music.
The speakers came from both national and regional networks, including the University Hospital of Würzburg, the RHÖN-Klinikum Campus Bad Neustadt and the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt.
The lively discussions focused on physical and psychological stress factors, complaints and illnesses, as well as possible approaches and preventive strategies. Music students were given special attention. This also took place intensively in the "workshop discussion", a discussion round dedicated to the tasks and challenges of health-related support for music students.
The symposium made it clear once again that adequate care in the sense of musician's medicine and musician's health is only possible in a team and in networking:
- In exchange with the different people within the university, i.e. from musician medicine, teaching and administration.
- In networking also outside the university, using the competence and diversity of health-related care and preventive offers at the respective university location
- As well as utilizing the networking of the musician medical societies nationally and internationally.
At the end of the event, this year's science prizes and the DGfMM study prize were awarded. The high level of the awarded papers was impressive!
