Member of the University Council | Kunsthalle Mannheim

Luisa Heese is a curator for contemporary art. Born in Göttingen in 1984, she studied Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Practice from 2005 to 2013, majoring in Art Studies in Hildesheim and in Caldas da Raínha, Portugal. After a traineeship at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, she worked there as a curator from 2015 to 2020. In 2019, she took over as acting director together with Hendrik Bündge. At the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Heese was responsible for exhibitions on VALIE EXPORT, Emeka Ogboh, Alina Szapocznikow and Boris Mikhailov, among others. From 2020 to 2023, she was Director of the Museum im Kulturspeicher Würzburg. Here she attracted national attention with her exhibition and education programme, most recently with a show together with the artist curator Michael Müller, who critically examined the founding history of the municipal collection during the Nazi era. In the exhibition "Konkret Global", Heese and her team thematised the idea of Concrete Art as a global phenomenon. The show "HEXEN! On Bodies, Knowledge and Power" offered an exploration of the ambiguous image of the witch in modern and contemporary art. She has worked as a curator for contemporary art and sculpture at the Kunsthalle Mannheim since 2023. As an art historian and author, she regularly writes for international specialist publications and takes on teaching assignments, including at the University of Würzburg.
