Johann Strauss' "Die Fledermaus"

Andreas Herold

Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus is often referred to as the queen of operetta, and many elevate this masterpiece to the status of an opera. The Würzburg Opera School does not care about the differentiation of the genre, but throws itself into the witty action with gusto and enthusiasm.

Instead of starting his prison sentence, the bon vivant Gabriel v. Eisenstein is lured by his friend Falke to a wicked party at Prince Orlowsky's house. There he not only meets his disguised chambermaid and the prison governor incognito, but also his own wife Rosalinde, who bewitches him as a supposed Hungarian countess. The next morning, Eisenstein is forced to realize that he was not the only one seeking extramarital diversion - the bat's revenge shatters illusions and the supposed bourgeois idyll.

The certainties of the Viennese were also shaken in 1874, when Die Fledermaus premiered: A stock market crash and a botched world exhibition had wiped out fortunes and destroyed livelihoods. With biting mockery and legendary wit, Johann Strauss and his librettist Richard Genée paint a picture of a society that places amusement and appearances above all else and succinctly ignores problems: "Happy is he who forgets what cannot be changed!" Parallels to the current situation are purely coincidental...
