The Bavarian state art academies and the Bavarian State Student Council recognize that the structures at art academies can encourage assaults and abuse of power. Art colleges are artistic and academic places of study and work where equal, trusting and respectful interaction between members and guests of the college must be an explicit guiding principle.
The art colleges and the Bavarian State Student Council strictly reject all forms of discrimination and abuse of power and actively oppose them. The great individual closeness as well as the special structures and dependency relationships in an artistic-academic educational establishment place particular demands on us in our structural responsibility. The universities do not tolerate abuse in any form. All members of the universities are therefore called upon to contribute to the creation of an appreciative and non-violent working and study environment that offers space for artistic development.
The universities have already initiated numerous activities, structural changes and awareness-raising measures to this end. The universities see the confrontation with abuse of power, discrimination and sexualized violence as an ongoing and active task. Open dialog within and outside the universities with all those involved is essential for this.
For this reason, the art colleges and the Bavarian State Student Council have joined forces to actively oppose all forms of abuse of power, discrimination and sexualized violence and to establish secure structures for the empowerment of students and staff as well as the sensitization and further training of all university members within the legal possibilities. Abuse of power, discrimination and (sexualized) violence have no place at Bavarian universities of the arts!
It should also be noted that the Rectors' Conference of German Universities of Music is preparing a detailed statement.
