For some years now, there has been an intensive discourse on the subject of abuse of power in the arts, culture and music sector. The emergence of specific cases and the results of initial studies have made it clear that this also takes place at conservatoires. It is crucial to take preventative action: because it is our task to ensure an environment that is characterized by respect and tolerance, trust and solidarity as well as openness and plurality and that forms the basis for good studying, making music, teaching and working.

From the 2025/26 academic year, we will be more actively addressing the issue of preventing abuse of power and are taking a unique approach compared to other universities in Germany: the University of Music Würzburg is enabling a team of six administrative and teaching staff to take part in the new certificate course "Recognizing and Preventing Abuse of Power" (MEV), thus ensuring the training of multipliers in-house. As part of the course, the team will develop a protection concept for the University of Music Würzburg and will advise the University Board on prevention work in the future.

About the programme:

The certificate programme "Recognizing and Preventing Abuse of Power" (MEV) at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) offers an in-depth examination of the causes, structures and consequences of abuse of power. The aim of the program is to create an awareness of responsible action and to impart skills in order to critically reflect on power structures and prevent abuse.

With MEV, the University and the University Hospital of Würzburg are setting an example against the abuse of power and for a culture of respect, integrity and transparency. The program is intended to contribute to a sustainable cultural change that both strengthens the institutions and promotes responsibility and ethical conduct in society.

We're very happy about the cooperation with the JMU and MEV!
