Study trip to Turkey for seven teaching students

From February 24 to March 4, 2024, 7 school music students traveled to Bursa Uludağ Üniversity in Turkey as part of the "International Music Education" seminar led by Prof. Dr. Alexis Kivi. The core idea was a holistic, culturally sensitive encounter concept in five dimensions. In joint seminars, the students learned about the different education systems, music teaching and music education and observed lessons at different schools, where they also taught themselves. The Würzburg students were privately hosted by the students from Bursa, which made it possible to have a wealth of conversations, make music together and gain insights into everyday student life there. They also sat in on numerous music and music education courses, such as the "Performing Arts in Primary School" course taught by Ass. Prof. Dr. Şehnaz Sungurtekin. In addition, music venues in the surrounding area were visited, where the students were warmly welcomed as guests at even private music and improvisation evenings with Turkish art and folk music. Prof. Dr. Kivi taught in seminars as part of an Erasmus teaching mobility, gave a workshop for local music teachers and exchanged ideas with colleagues about school music curricula.

The second part of the encounter project will take place in University of Music Würzburg from 20 to 28 June 2024, during which Prof. Dr. Sezen Özeke, Dr. Volkan Karaman and 7 school music students from Bursa will be guests at the University of Music Würzburg and privately with Würzburg students. The entire project will be scientifically monitored by Prof. Özeke and Prof. Dr. Kivi and evaluated at the conference of the "European Association for Music in Schools" (EAS) in Dublin in June in comparison with previous exchange projects by Prof. Dr. Kivi in Bursa, Barcelona and Thessaloniki.

The two-sided encounter project was funded by the German-Turkish Youth Bridge (Düsseldorf) with 5,000 euros and co-financed with PROMOS and Erasmus funds as well as funds from the University of Music Würzburg. In addition, the Helbling publishing house and the music company Thomann supported the project with generous donations in kind such as songbooks and instruments.
