Donquixotteries

Opera project in the summer semester 2023 | Tickets available now

Everyone knows Don Quixote's battles against windmills and herds of mutton, which he believes to be giants in one case and foreign armies in the other. His loyal love and adoration for the noble Dulcinea of Toboso (actually a peasant girl from the neighboring village) is just as legendary as the countless adventures he experiences with the faithful squire Sancho Panza, at the end of which both are usually beaten up.

Under the overall direction of Prof. Katharina Thoma, the Opera School of the University of Music Würzburg will present its summer project entitled "Donquixotteries" on June 30, as well as July 1, 3 and 4, 2023, which will examine Cervantes' hero from different angles in the course of two short operas.

In Manuel de Falla's "El retablo de maese Pedro" (1923) Don Quixote is so drawn into the action as an audience member at a puppet show that he ruins the entire performance (and the puppets) for Master Pedro, the puppet show director, by heroically fighting his way into the stage action. Weather permitting, this part of the evening will take place outdoors in the courtyard of the Bibrastraße building.

The second play of the evening, ″Don Quichotte chez la Duchesse″ (1743) by Josef Bodin de Boismortier, is based on an episode from the second volume of the novel. Here, our two heroes have already achieved such notoriety that they are recognized by the other characters in the novel. Musically, the work unfolds baroque sensuality in the Theater in der Bibrastraße.

Tickets are available in advance at the Ticketservice Falkenhaus.
