Workshops

Intro to Jitter - Prof. Dr. Jason Thorpe Buchanan | To Be Announced

  • This is an introductory workshop introducing “Jitter” within the visual programming environment Max, focused on using the computer to create generative video with an inherently musical approach, and to enable the creation of interactive performances, musical or intermedia compositions, and improvisation environments. Students will learn how to ingest and process/manipulate live video from camera feeds as well as pre-recorded video samples and composite them together, presenting strategies to compose with not fixed but rather live video. Familiarity with Max is advised but not required.

Seminars

Analyse Komposition mit Digitalen Medien - Prof. Dr. Jason Thorpe Buchanan, WS 2025/26 | Freitags 10:15-12:00 Uhr | MU.27  „eem“ Large Studio

  •  A historical survey of experimental electronic, electroacoustic, and intermedia composers, works, strategies, and technologies over the past 90 years. We’ll examine tools and methodologies utilized by a wide range of composers to create music that incorporates technology in a meaningful way, with an emphasis on more recent developments in electroacoustic and intermedia composition since the mid-80s. The focus of this course is on providing historical context for modern practices concerning computer music, and the analytical skills that enable students to critique, understand, and ultimately create their own works grounded in rigorous and well-established computer music practices. It is oriented toward musicians and composers, as well as other creative students with some musical background.

Audioprogramming I - Hannes Brugger, WS 2025/26 | Donnerstags 10:30-12:00 Uhr | MU.27  „eem“ Large Studio

  •  An introductory project-based seminar in electronic and electroacoustic music using the visual programming environments Max and PureData. This is a lab course focused on using the computer to create generative music, and to enable the creation of interactive performances, musical or intermedia compositions, and improvisation environments. Students will be expected to produce a final semester project to be performed in a small class concert, and will learn to create modular patches that can be used to drive software instruments or perform various methods of digital signal processing, and manipulate audio or other forms of media in various ways. By the end of the course, students will be able to create and perform using a range of customizable digital signal processing tools, and will have acquired the skills necessary to embark on more advanced computer music projects.

Studiotechnik I - Hannes Brugger, WS 2025/26 | Donnerstags 12:30-14:00 Uhr | MU.27  „eem“ Large Studio

  •  A introduction to studio techniques relevant to composers and experimental musicians, such as recording, mixing, editing, post-production, more.

Colloquium

„eem“ Colloquium - Prof. Dr. Jason Thorpe Buchanan & Hannes Brugger | Donnerstags 18:00-20:00 Uhr | MU.27  „eem“ Large Studio

  •  A monthly colloquium where faculty, guests, and student composers present their work followed by group discussion.
