Born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, double bassist Nina Valcheva combines outstanding orchestral experience with a career as a soloist and chamber musician, as well as a passion for training young musicians.

She began her musical training at the conservatoires in Sofia and Stuttgart, where she studied in Prof. Lau’s class and graduated with distinction. During her studies, she gained valuable experience in professional orchestral settings, including at the Württemberg State Opera in Stuttgart and the SWR Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra.

Her artistic career took her to the Lübeck Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Theatre in Mannheim as principal double bassist. Since September 2011, she has been deputy principal double bassist with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, where her musical profile has helped shape the orchestra’s double bass sound.

Until 2024, she was also principal double bassist with the Festival Orchestra of the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, where she performed on several occasions as a chamber musician, including in Mozart’s ‘Gran Partita’ and Dvořák’s Serenade.

Since 2022, Nina Valcheva has also been a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. A special connection with the Bayreuth Festival was forged during the ‘150 Years of the Bayreuth Festival’ anniversary year, when she performed as a soloist at the historic Haus Wahnfried in Bayreuth.

As a much sought-after musician, Nina Valcheva regularly appears as a guest with renowned orchestras and chamber music ensembles. Engagements have taken her to the WDR and NDR Symphony Orchestras, amongst others, as well as to numerous other prestigious ensembles. Concert tours and musical projects have taken her throughout Europe and Asia, opening up a diverse international artistic sphere of activity for her.

Another key focus of her work is teaching. Since 2007, Nina Valcheva has held a teaching post at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart, where she was appointed Professor of Double Bass in 2023. In her teaching, she combines her experience of international orchestral and concert life with a commitment to passing on musical individuality, technical mastery and artistic expressiveness to the next generation.

Since October 2026, Nina Valcheva has been Professor of Double Bass at the Würzburg University of Music.
