Born in 1962 in Viersen (NRW), Andreas Dohmen studied double bass with Rolf Heister and composition with Dieter Torkewitz at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. From 1987 to 1990 he participated annually in Franco Donatonian's master classes for composition at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena; from 1988 to 1990 he studied composition with Franco Donatoni in Milan and Biella as a scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service/DAAD. After teaching assignments at the conservatories in Essen, Duisburg, Dortmund and Bremen, since 2013 Professor of Composition at the University of Music Würzburg.

Prize winner at the international composition competition of the WDR Cologne/Forum junger Komponisten, honorary diploma (diploma di merito) of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana Siena, Folkwang Prize for Composition, Kunstpreis Berlin/Förderpreis Musik, 1st prize at the international composition competition of the city of Rome "Premio Valentino Bucchi", 1st prize at the composition competition of the state capital Stuttgart, Orchestra Prize of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg/Donaueschinger Musiktage 2011.
