Prof. Dr. Volker Schütz (1939-2022) was appointed to the HfM Würzburg in 1989, where he taught music education until his retirement in 2003. From 1999 to 2003, he served on the university's board of directors as vice-rector.
After studying English, musicology, philosophy and education as well as artistic teaching in Frankfurt, he worked for many years as a church musician and in the school service, taught at the University of Education in Lüneburg from 1977 and received his doctorate in 1982.
Prof. Dr. Schütz is one of the music educators who, as early as the early 1980s, campaigned intensively and successfully for the integration of pop and rock music into the curricula of schools and universities. Another focus of his pedagogical work was transcultural music education, which often took him to Africa.
All who knew him remember an inspiring educator, versatile musician, and especially endearing person.
We will cherish Volker Schütz's memory.
