Born in Bad Tölz, after graduating from high school he studied philosophy at the Munich School of Philosophy from 1974 to 1976. From 1974 to 1978 he studied conducting at the State Academy of Music in Munich, which he completed in 1978 with the artistic state examination. From 1978 to 1980 he was solo répétiteur and assistant to the general music director at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. From 1980 to 1986 he was Kapellmeister at the Hessisches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden. Since 1988 Wolfgang Kurz has been a full-time lecturer in orchestral conducting and accompaniment at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg. From 1992 to 1993 he also held a teaching position for conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt/Main.

Wolfgang Kurz is conductor of the Würzburg Chamber Orchestra and the Bad Mergentheim Chamber Choir. He has been a guest conductor with the Bach-Collegium Munich, the Musikalischer Sommer in Baden-Baden, the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester Mannheim, the Bayerische Kammeroper in Veitshöchheim, the Ansbacher Kammerorchester and the Allgäu-Sinfonietta. In addition, he has an active concert career as a lied accompanist. In 1999 he was a prize-winner at the Valentin Becker composition competition and also won several prizes at the composition competition of the Hessian Singers' Association in 2002.
