Ryosuke Sakamoto was born in Nara/Japan. He studied medieval plucked instruments at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Crawford Young, lute with Hopkinson Smith and 16th century performance practice with Anne Smith, as well as aesthetics at the University of Tokyo and viola da gamba.

As a gambist and lutenist, he has performed in Europe, Japan and the USA, with groups such as "La Morra", the Bach Collegium Japan and others.

In 2013 he won the first prize as well as the audience prize at the competition "Concorso Maurizio Pratola" in L'Aquila in the lute solo category (no second prize was awarded). His international concert activity includes lute recitals at festivals such as "Resonanzen" Vienna, "Les journées du luth" Paris, "Fest für die Laute Wien", "Internationales Festival der Laute" Bremen and others.

In 2007 his first solo CD "Travels with my Lute" was released by Musica Rediviva (MRCD-013), which was praised by critics like the magazine "Gramophone". His second solo CD will be released soon.

Ryosuke is a member of the lute consort "Delight in Disorder" and the ensembles "Il Zabaione Musicale" (focusing on early Baroque Italian music) and the English Broken Consort "Queen's Levels". He is also a founding member of the ensemble "Il bell'humore", which specializes in music of the 16th century.
