Leave of absence

Students can be exempted from the obligation to study properly for good cause upon application. No justification is required for the first and second semester of leave of absence for the respective degree program.

During a leave of absence, re-registration is required.

What should the application contain?

In addition to the application form, the application for leave of absence includes suitable evidence (e.g. internship contract) to justify it.

If the important reason is an illness, this must be proven by a medical certificate and, at the request of the HfM Würzburg, by an official medical certificate.

How long can leave be taken?

A leave of absence is approved by the university for one entire semester at a time. Approval is possible for a maximum of two semesters.

Periods of maternity leave, parental leave and periods for the care of a close relative are not counted towards the maximum duration.

A leave of absence in the 1st subject or university semester is not possible.

What happens after the application?

The leave of absence is issued in writing. The new certificate of enrollment can then be created independently in MyCampus.

Can leave of absence also be granted retroactively?

No, retroactive leave of absence is not possible for semesters already completed.

Study and examination achievements during the leave of absence

No coursework or examinations can be taken at the University of Music Würzburg during a leave of absence. The only exception is the repetition of failed examinations. In the case of a leave of absence due to maternity leave, parental leave or the care of close relatives, examinations can also be taken during a leave of absence.

Leave of absence or temporary de-registration

If a leave of absence is not possible, exmatriculation instead of a leave of absence can be granted upon request in suitable individual cases, with the assurance of renewed enrolment without a new aptitude test or procedure. The period between exmatriculation and renewed enrolment may not exceed one semester, or two semesters in particularly justified exceptional cases. If this period is exceeded, a new aptitude test or a new aptitude procedure is required.

Reasons for a leave of absence

  • Medically certified illness that prevents proper study in the semester in question;
  • Entitlement to maternity leave or parental leave;
  • Study-related studies at a university abroad;
  • extraordinary expenses due to the care of close relatives for whom there is an obligation to provide maintenance;
  • compulsory internships regulated by the study and examination regulations of the University of Music Würzburg, which take place outside the university and take up a considerable part of the teaching time.
  • Voluntary artistic orchestral internships within the standard period of study
  • fixed-term employment contracts in the musical field.

Other reasons can only be recognized after careful examination of the individual case. Financial and/or economic reasons do not count as important reasons.
