Library

From A-Z

Please inform us immediately of any changes to your address - you are also welcome to do so by e-mail.

Basic information on library use and holdings is available at the circulation desk. In addition, we are of course available by telephone and e-mail.

If you need to borrow sheet music to prepare for the BigBand or SchuMu Orchestra seminars, please borrow the score of your piece first.

You will need to pre-order the corresponding individual parts. To do this, please send us an e-mail with the details of the piece (composer, title, signature) and for which date you need the sheet music. We will then place the pre-ordered sheet music at the circulation desk for you to borrow. The loan period for individual sheet music is one day.

Orders can only be accepted up to the day before you need them.

The scores for the current rehearsals and concerts of the University Choir and Chamber Choir as well as other choir projects can be obtained directly at the circulation desk of the library. See also loan periods and return.

You can obtain your instrumental part for the concerts and repertoire rehearsals of the University Orchestra directly at the circulation desk of the library. See also loan periods and return

If you wish, we will be happy to notify you automatically by e-mail when the loan period for your media expires or an item is ready for pickup (reservation).

To do so, enter your current e-mail address in your account in the online catalog.

Under "my user data" you will find the input field e-mail under the heading "address". Please also enter any changes to your e-mail address here.

The e-mail notification is without guarantee! You are still obliged to pay attention to the end of the loan period yourself.

The multifunctional card of the University of Music Würzburg serves as a user ID for students, lecturers, and staff.

To activate this card for borrowing from the library, present a valid ID card or ID and certificate of registration at the library and fill out a registration form. The user account is then valid for students for one semester at a time and is extended for another semester upon presentation of the currently validated user ID.

The personal data we collect is used for the performance of our duties and is subject to the provisions of data protection. We will not pass them on to third parties.

The loss of this card must be reported to the library of the University of Music immediately.

Your user number is printed on your multifunction card (starts with 979...). The password is preset to the day, month and year of your birthday, e.g. 050581.

If you have changed your password and don't know it anymore, send us an e-mail. We will then reset the password to the default setting.

As a digital extension of the media offering, the library has compiled relevant and interesting information and media offerings on the Internet about music and music education on the Digital Offerings page. There you will find

  • Literature information in bibliographic databases and catalogs,
  • sheet music online (not only IMSLP)

and much more.

However, some of the databases are only fully usable within the university network. This is because they are subject to licensing and the library has purchased a campus license.

The library is available to external users as a reference library. They can research and work on site. A multifunction card is required to use the copier (cost for external users € 5.00 payable with EC card).

DBIS is a service that lists scientific databases. In addition to the databases licensed by the University of Music Würzburg, it also records the databases to which we have subscribed via the national license and free databases on all subjects.

The library welcomes acquisition suggestions at any time. Please use our contact form for acquisition suggestions or send us an e-mail.

In order to order the right thing in each case, the information on desired titles should be as complete as possible. For example, in the case of music orders, we need to know which musical edition form is desired (piano reduction, score, parts, etc.).

EZproxy enables university members to use library databases outside the university network, i.e. on the road or from home.

No installation of additional software is necessary. In addition, you do not have to search for the appropriate login on the pages of the content providers, but can start using them directly via our access link.

EZproxy works independently of the browser and operating system used. To use EZproxy, Javascript, pop-ups and cookies must be allowed in your browser. The default settings of browsers usually meet these requirements.

The login is done with your University of Music Würzburg account. (You do not know your University of Music Würzburg account access data or have forgotten the password? Please contact the IT department of the University of Music Würzburg).

After logging in with your HfM-Account, your computer will have an IP address of the University of Music Würzburg during the current browser session and you will be classified as an authorized user by the providers of licensed electronic resources.

Important: If you leave the database web pages or call a database manually, you will leave EZproxy and have to log in again.

Observe license terms

Please be sure to observe the license terms and applicable copyright law, even when accessing externally.

The library of the University of Music Würzburg does not participate in interlibrary loan. Please contact the library of the University of Würzburg for interlibrary loan of media. We will be happy to provide you with assistance in researching and carrying out an ordering process.

Freehand area

Freely accessible you will find the stock of books, sheet music and periodicals. White spine labels(signature) indicate that the media can be borrowed regularly.

Additionally marked with a yellow sticker "Not available for loan" are the media of the reference collection that can only be used on site. This applies mainly to reference works or the volumes of the Musicians' Complete Editions.

Choral materials for ensemble practice are marked with a green sticky dot. These materials are located separately in the back of the library and should be readily available for checkout as choral materials for choral conducting classes.

A certain part of the media stock (e.g. choral and orchestral material, sound recordings) is located in the not freely accessible areas and can only be used by pre-order. You can recognize this in the online catalog by the beginning of the call number 940/-948/.

We offer individual introductions to the use of the library, the online catalog or database services for teachers, seminars and school classes. Please make an appointment by e-mail or telephone.

On the second opening day after the loan period has expired, we will ask you to return the media for a fee.

The following uniform fees currently apply to the Bavarian State Libraries:

  1. Request: 7,50 €
  2. request: 10,00 €
  3. request: 20,00 € + postage
  4. request: 30,00 € + postage

The reminder fees are to be paid with the multifunction card at the circulation desk of the library of the University of Music Würzburg.

Why are reminders so expensive?

The amount of the reminder is regulated by the Bavarian Cost Law. The University of Music Würzburg library has no influence on this. The fee also does not remain in the library, but is forwarded to the state treasury. Since we remind you by e-mail to return books, a reminder should be avoidable. If you are unable to return media by the deadline, let us know. We can certainly find a solution and you will avoid a reminder. However, there is no (legal) entitlement to notification by e-mail. You are responsible for meeting the loan deadlines for your books and may have to pay an applicable reminder fee.

Under "My library account" in the catalog of the University of Music Würzburg, you can see the media you have currently borrowed, reserved and reminded. Here you can create watch lists, reserve media and extend loan periods.

To access your account, enter your user number and password (preset to the day, month and year of your birthday, e.g. "050581″).

You can borrow baskets at the counter for borrowing choral sets or for transporting media in the Bibrastraße building.

The loan period for most media is 30 opening days. These media can be extended twice for another 30 opening days.

Exceptions are media from the area of elementary music education (local code 933/) and sound carriers (CD, LP, DVD, Blu-Ray). These can only be borrowed for 15 opening days and extended twice for 15 opening days each.

The following items cannot be borrowed

  • magazine issues
  • bound volumes of magazines
  • media with a yellow "Not for loan" sign

Individual loan periods can be arranged for specific teaching projects. The same applies to media from the reference collection, for which a short-term loan is possible by arrangement.

The loan period for performance materials for orchestral, choral, chamber music, and stage performances, as well as repertory rehearsals, generally ends the day after the last performance date or rehearsal.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) funds the acquisition of national licenses for electronic media. The institutions listed below have concluded license agreements with the providers on behalf of the eligible institutions.

The library of the University of Music Würzburg is primarily available to the students and teachers of the university. They can use and borrow the holdings without restriction.

The library is available to external users as a reference library. They can research and work on site. A multifunction card is required to use the photocopier (cost for external users € 5.00 payable by EC card).

Media from the reference collection can be recognized by the yellow "Not available for loan" sticker. They can only be used on the premises of the library. In exceptional cases, short loans can be granted(loan periods).

Reference holdings usually include reference works, complete editions or media of special value or rarity. Journal issues are also excluded from lending.

The entire library collection can be searched via the online catalog. The online catalog is freely accessible via the Internet - so you can use it at any place and at any time.

There are three computers available in the library for catalog use and WLAN (Wi-Fi) for your own devices. See also Technical equipment.

In addition to pure research, the online catalog offers you services that are linked to your user account. For example, you can bookmark media.

Please make sure that you return borrowed media completely. This applies in particular to editions of sheet music that contain part books. Incomplete media units cannot be returned. If you have lost an item, please contact the staff at the circulation desk.

Outside the library's opening hours, you can use the return box (Bibrastraße building, entrance gate, right side, last mailbox at the bottom before the ramp).

Please send returns by mail to: University of Music Wuerzburg - Library Hofstallstr. 6-8 97070 Wuerzburg, Germany

In general, we recommend that you return items to the circulation desk. However, the use of the return box is at your own risk.

The library of the University of Music Würzburg provides semester collections for teaching purposes. Literature that lecturers and professors consider fundamental and important for courses is included in the semester collections.

In the online catalog, the semester collections can be identified by their status ("borrowed, no reservation possible"). If they look in the copy display at branch, you will see the note "special location" and the associated semester apparatus.

To ensure that all students have the opportunity to read, copy or scan this literature, it can only be borrowed after consultation with the lecturer.

The shelfmark indicates the location of the searched medium on the shelf. Books and sheet music are arranged according to a system. Within a system group, sorting is done alphabetically. For this purpose, a letter abbreviation and a number are added to the system location, according to which the books are sorted alphanumerically. The letter abbreviation is usually formed from the names of the authors or composers. The classification place and letter abbreviation together then form the signature.

Examples:

  • A 203 WOLF3 L1 (works for one voice with piano by Hugo Wolff)
  • Sbc 32 L6 (Handbook of music psychology by Andreas Lehmann)

The signature can be found on the books, sheet music, etc. on a small spine label. In the online catalog, you will find the shelfmark in the copy information. Remember or make a note of the signatures when searching the online catalog to find what you are looking for as quickly as possible. For orientation in the library, the front sides of the shelves are labeled.

The systematics of a library, lists the available media according to a system of the sciences, whereby the individual fields of knowledge are arranged in a factual-logical sequence. The system is therefore particularly suitable for gaining an overview of the publications on larger interrelated fields of knowledge with their subdisciplines and neighboring disciplines.

The systematics of the books follows a subdivision according to subject areas, e.g.:

Sbh Music Education Sbh 4 School and Out-of-School Music Education Sbh 40 School Music Sbh 400 Gesamtdarstellungen, Einführungen Sbh 401 Theories and Didactics of School Music.

The system of notes is divided according to instruments and instrument groups, scores and piano reductions, e.g.:

L string instruments L 1 violin L 10 violin, solo L 100 violin solo, schools.

The two most important criteria for the classification of sound carriers are the instrumentation of musical pieces and the musical genres. In addition, especially in the classification groups TU, TW and TX, the classification criteria occasion and purpose of music are also used.

You can find the classification overviews here.

The technical equipment of the library for your independent use includes:

  • Three stationary computers for research work
  • WLAN (Wi-Fi) for the university members' own devices
  • Fee-paying copier (multifunction card) with scanning function on USB stick
  • Book scanner book2net - to use it, you need your own USB stick to store the scans.
  • Various devices with playback and dubbing capabilities for Blu-ray, DVD, CD, DAT, minidisc, video, cassette, vinyl record.

We would like to point out that copyright law must be observed when using the library collections. This applies in particular to scanning and copying.

  • For each medium, a maximum of two renewals are possible (at the earliest five opening days before the expiry of the loan period and at the latest on the day of the expiry of the loan period).
  • Media that have been reserved by another user cannot be renewed.
  • For media that cannot be extended, the original loan period still applies.

Extend your loan period yourself.

You can renew items yourself in your account and see immediately which items have been renewed and until when. You will need your user number and password.

  • You can reserve media directly from the online catalog via the tab "I would like to have that" and thus reserve them for later borrowing.
  • The current borrower can then no longer extend the loan period.
  • Only one reservation is possible for each item.

Display in your account

You can see your current reservations in the sub-account "Reservations" of your account.

Provision

As soon as the medium you have reserved is returned, it will appear in the "Orders" sub-account of your account as "available for pick-up" and will be ready for you to pick up for one week. In addition, you will receive a notification by e-mail.

Cancellation

You can cancel reservations that are no longer required in the "Reservations" sub-account of your account.

Please remember - especially before long absences - to return or renew your media in time. After the loan period has expired, the media can no longer be renewed.

From the second opening day after the loan period has been exceeded, we will issue a reminder with costs.

In our magazine rack you will find the issues of the current year. The issues of previous years are bound and are arranged on the shelf. Journals belong to the reference stock and are therefore excluded from the loan.
